It took quite some time, but after 118 years we got a winner from Qatar in Kungens Kanna 2019, Sweden’s prestigious junior tournament for the world’s best U14 players.
For the first time in the competition’s 118-year history, a player from Qatar came out on top. It was not the exciting match what we had hoped for between Rashed Nawaf from Qatar and Yaroslav Demin from Russia. The Russian put all his energy into his semi-final the day before when he conquered the Romanian, Coman, after a brutal fight. In the final, he was not really himself and Nawaf ran out an easy winner, 6-1, 6-0.
Rashed Nawaf first took an interest in tennis when he was six years old and watched Roger Federer win the ATP-tournament in Doha, Qatar, in 2011. After experiencing Roger play tennis, Nawaf has been playing ever since. In 2019, Rashed was part of the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy and played tennis three hours a day as well as attending school for four hours a day.
